SPECIAL HOROSCOPE FOR LIBRA: (SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 22)
THE BIG PICTURE

Happy Birthday, Libra! This month we're going to be taking a look at a couple of factors that are intended to help shape your life direction over the next year or two. One of these factors is Saturn's move into your solar 11th house in the sign of Leo. The other factor is a pair of eclipses happening in October, one of them in your very own sign.

Now I'll admit that Saturn doesn't have a very good reputation in astrology. It was traditionally considered a 'malefic,' which, very roughly translated, means 'bad planet.' The ancients thought its presence in a particular sector meant bad things in that area. If Saturn was really to operate like this, its presence in your solar 11th house would mean that you'd potentially find yourself in a bit of a bad mood for the next couple of years. You'd find yourself plagued by potentially vague worries about life in general and perhaps an uneasy intuition that nothing was really going to work out for you. This is because the 11th house has a connection with your overall life direction, in the sense of harboring your hopes and dreams for what you want to fulfill in life.

Being in a bad mood for a couple of years is neither the end of the world nor a particularly happy prediction. But it's also not the best use of this energy. The eclipses in your own and opposite sign give a clue as to what Saturn's energy is intended to help you accomplish.

First, I'll start out by noting the effect I've actually seen Saturn in the solar 11th house have. It's sort of like a feeling of staring in the beautiful department store window looking at all the wonderful things you can't have. More precisely, it's that feeling that creeps up on everyone from time to time: the feeling that you are not living the life you envisioned for yourself. Almost everyone feels this way periodically--they intended to sing opera for a living, not folk-rock during open mike night at the local cafe. They intended to help the environment, not slave away in a cubicle. Stuff like that. Saturn in the 11th reminds us of all the important stuff we were going to do--that somehow we didn't end up doing.

Even more distressing perhaps, is the fact that Saturn likes to point out firmly and sternly that whatever it was we wanted is never going to happen. Not with the path we're on now. We can kiss our dreams goodbye unless we do something differently. It shows us obstacles, blockages, and obligations. It shows us how we can't do things. At the same time, it makes us wish more than ever that we could. Combining wants to with can't is a perfect recipe for frustration. Frustration is Saturn's specialty.

Frustration has a very specific cure, at least in your chart. It involves trying and trying and trying and trying and trying again, and getting nowhere. It involves throwing everything down in total despair and giving up. And then it involves, in the quietness of not trying, a realization that maybe if you didn't try it the same old way but did something different....it just might work.

We can tell what Saturn's game plan is by looking at those eclipses I mentioned. Eclipses are astrology's way of saying 'Hey, here's a chance to do it differently! Compliments of the universe. Surprise!' Eclipses, when they work at their best, accidentally force you to stop doing whatever it is the same old way and come at problems from another angle. So, in reality, Saturn's sojourn in Leo isn't bad news for you, you actually have the most exalted opportunity from its placement of anybody in the zodiac.

You, unlike everyone else, actually have an opportunity to get your life back on track in the deepest, big picture way. Everyone could use this assistance, but you are the only one actually getting it. Let's look at exactly how this is done, using the eclipses.

The first eclipse, a solar eclipse in your own sign, occurs on October 3. It could make itself felt any time from now through mid-November. You'll know when it occurs because you'll feel a sense of surprise. You don't have to do anything at the moment of surprise, just observe yourself. No matter what happens, just stubornly watch yourself reacting and see what you can learn from it.

What I am hoping this eclipse or the lunar eclipse in Aries on the 17th will do is give you a blast of energy. A surprising feeling of new life. You may feel it in a very physical sense. Another potential manifestation is becoming conscious that your personality is changing. You watch yourself relating to your external environment in some surprising way, doing something you don't normally do.

Bingo! These manifestations are your precious clues. Which is why it is so important to observe yourself. If you sit down at the piano and are shocked to realize how much you love music and how much you have missed it--that's your clue as to what's missing in your life and how to get the joy that connects you with your deepest purpose back. When you feel that happy energy coursing through you. Take note of this. Write it down if you have to. Even if you don't journal, send someone an email saying 'I forgot how much music energizes me!' You want to remember what truly energizes you because Saturn in the 11th is your opportunity to clear away the stuff that's crept into your life that keeps you from connecting with it. It's not going to be easy, but boy is it going to be satisfying. That's Saturn's other specialty--satisfaction.

Sometimes it's not a matter of remembering what parts of your soul you've let fall by the wayside, but of realizing that a personality style has gotten in your way and always will unless you're willing to move out of your comfort zone. For Libras, this often means things like going along to get along. If you find yourself being surprisingly assertive in an Arien-type way, that's a good thing. It's your precious clue.

It's your clue that getting what you truly want and need out of life will not happen unless you learn to expand your Libra harmonizing personality to include some good old-fashioned 'I want this for me!' energy. Again, this is not easy, but boy does it pay off.

The eclipses are here to help you figure out what it is you need to do. Saturn is here to help motivate you do it. It's an extremely beneficial combination. Even if you don't feel the stirrings of longing that Saturn likes to agitate when it's in the 11th (and you may not yet, Saturn works slowly), you most likely will before he leaves the sign in a couple of years. So take note now of what these eclipses tell you. Don't forget what it is in life that gives you joy and passion and energy; don't give up on getting what you want on the deepest level. Saturn doesn't want you to, and it's never wise to mess with a planet whose nickname is 'bad planet.' Stay on his good side; keep your eyes on the prize that is life fulfillment, and you'll do just fine.

ARIES: MARCH 21 - APRIL 19

So Aries, this month marks a lunar eclipse in your sign on October 17. This could be potentially significant for you and we'll address it in light of what Saturn's move into Leo means for you. Leo and your sign of Aries are in trine to each other which means that when something happens in one of these signs, it works with whatever's happening in the other sign.

Okay, so let's talk about Saturn for a bit. Saturn will be in your solar fifth house of love affairs for about two years. One traditional interpretation for this is taking on a lover that is older than you. I don't know how you feel about a potential love affair with someone older, but you can keep that interpretation in mind as things progress.

Another traditional interpretation of Saturn in the 5th is bad things or difficulties in love. This is usually interpreted to apply to existing love relationships, although it could apply to any new relationships taken up under this influence. Sometimes it means that the lover in question gives you (or puts you through) hell for a couple of years. By the way, this doesn't mean that if you start going out with someone older, things will necessarily go badly. It's usually an either/or situation. Either a relationship with someone older or difficulties in a current one. Although I suppose you could have both happening at the same time.

Since the 5th house also rules children, sometimes it's interpreted to indicate that your children will put you through hell for a couple of years. If you have teenagers, this is probably going to happen anyway, no matter what astrology says, but forewarned is forearmed.

Going through hell with lovers and children is not a great way to use this energy though. Let's try to redirect it towards something more purposeful. The essential lesson of Saturn here is that certain things are not going to work in your close relationships with others. One of them is aggression. Another is pride. A third is an autocratic attitude.

If we couldn't figure this out from Saturn's placement, the eclipses in your own and opposite sign in October make this pretty clear. Now, as an Aries, you may have no idea that you could potentially come across as aggressive, prideful, and autocratic with your lovers and children. It does happen though with Aries, even when you are convinced it isn't. What you have is a very prolonged opportunity to check yourself rigorously and make sure you aren't unintentionally trampling on the rights of others. Every time you experience something in your close relationships that you don't like over the next couple of years, STOP and ask yourself if you are being 100% mindful of the other's person's rights in the matter. Even if you are righter than a stack of Nobel Prize-winners, stop and ask yourself if it is possible you could convey a more explicit sense of concern for the other party's interests.

If you do this, you will gain mightily. We know this sort of thing is what Saturn in this sector is up to by looking at the eclipses. A lunar eclipse in your own sign often brings a sense of self-consciousness. In a way, that's what it's there for. To make you conscious, in an emotional way, of your relationships. You may suddenly realize that you've been irresponsible or that you haven't acted in the most noble of ways. The opposite eclipse in Libra on October 3 highlights your marriage, marriage partner, and perhaps your enemies. What ever comes into the open between now and mid-November is intended to help you realize what kind of energy you are attracting in your life. If all the energy you experience between now and then is positive and life-affirming--excellente! Stay the course and don't worry about problems with lovers and kids. If it's not...all the universe is asking you to do is become conscious and aware of how you are running your life. It's just wants you to look at what's going on. The universe is not trying to give you a hard time with this. It knows that as an Aries you like to be in charge of your life and your results. It also knows that you can't take charge of what you're not aware of. If anything's off course you can correct it, once you realize what your part in things is. If you never become aware, what you don't know ends up controlling you.

So skip the conflict with the lovers and the kids and concentrate instead on becoming conscious of your relationships so that you can manage them, and your own reactions, in a way that works out for everybody.

TAURUS: APRIL 20 - MAY 20

Well, Taurus, I have good news and I have bad news. What I'm going to do is ask you to ignore the bad news and concentrate on the good. But let's lay out what those things are.

The bad news is Saturn in Leo in your solar 4th house of home and all that's related to home. This is traditionally considered a difficult placement. But I'm going to ask you to essentially ignore it. Here's why. Saturn in the 4th house is supposed to indicate the need for a fundamental change or restructuring in your home life. Taureans typically hate fundamental changes or restructurings of their home life. There is a reason for this. They usually go to a lot of trouble to get it right the first time. They don't need fundamental changes in this sector because they attend to it right from the get-go. And you know what? I'm going to side with you Taurus on this one.

Unless there is a dire need for changes or restructuring on the home front, skip it. Concentrate instead on the good news. There is too much else going on in your chart for you to worry about things you don't have to do. You see, I'm going to place an opposite interpretation on this placement. I'm going with the idea that Taureans usually express themselves creatively on the home front. They decorate, they do crafts, they nurture, they maintain their furnishings, they take care of stuff. I actually think that Saturn, the planet of delay, operating in this sector just means that you're going to have to delay all that fun stuff for awhile. You're probably going to be too tired to work on the house anyway.

You see, Mars is in your own sign til mid-February, encouraging you to go out and get what you want from life. Neptune is taking an interest in your career, Jupiter has been beaming on your work sector and an eclipse is activated in the work sector this month too. Add it all up and I spot a trend. I think the universe is up to something. The lunar eclipse in Aries mid-month combined with Mars in your own sign makes me think the universe wants you to develop a little more self-confidence in your orientation toward life. All the activity in the work sector of your chart makes think that's where your self-confidence is supposed to bloom. I would encourage you to devote the bulk of your efforts towards work or whatever plays that role in your life through mid-November or thereabouts.

And I would encourage you to channel your efforts in that sector in a particular way--towards appreciating people. Letting your work colleagues know what you value in them. Keeping a positive attitude and radiating it outward no matter what happens. That smile on your face I asked you to put on your face a couple of months ago - keep it there and treat your co-workers to its charm. The reason I'd like you to do this is that the eclipse on October 3 (which may be felt anytime from now until a month or so later) indicates a surprise for you in the work sector. I would really really like for that to be a pleasant surprise. And I have this feeling that the more pleasant you are to folks, the more pleasant that surprise is likely to be.

I actually think the universe is conspiring in your favor these days, Taurus, in spite of all the squares around fixed signs that are being activated. I think those squares are just meant to motivate you to get off your butt and conquer some little piece of the world. I think that's why Saturn has parked itself in your 4th house, because it wants you to be a little less of a home-loving Taurean for awhile. The universe seems to like you and to want you to develop some of your other talents. To be as comfortable in the big bad world as you are at home. Even your partner will support you in this I think. Go for it!

GEMINI: MAY 21 - JUNE 20

So Gemini, this month we're addressing Saturn's move into Leo and also a couple of eclipses that could affect you in October. First, let's address Saturn. The ancients thought it meant disaster in whatever sector it transited. Some more modern astrologers believe it also represents opportunity. I'm going to side with the more modern view here because I have rarely seen Saturn bring outright disaster. Difficulty, yes. Disaster, no not really. And I have definitely seen it bring opportunity.

So what kind of opportunity does it bring in your solar 3rd house? Well, Gemini, for whatever reason, the universe by my reading seems to be placing an interesting emphasis on getting you to show the nice side of your nature here lately. In a very tricky and rather unusual kind of way, Saturn's transit of Leo continues this theme. You see, the third house is the natural home of Gemini. It is a house that represents the intellectual sphere of life, an area in which the sign of Gemini preferentially operates. What this means is that most Geminis have a longing for some kind of intellectual attainment or achievement. I don't meet a lot of Geminis who vocalize this, but it drives them under the surface. It makes them want to be right. No matter how smart a particular Gemini might be, the sign itself is almost never satisfied. Underneath it all, it feels uneasy and wants to be even smarter, to gain some sort of solid foothold wherein its inherent smartness is recognized and celebrated. Even when a Gemini's inherent smartness is recognized and celebrated though, the darn sign still feels it's not enough, not that safe.

The way this plays out most commonly is in a Gemini urge to criticize others. To be little smarter, to show people up a bit. This isn't always conscious but it often comes out somehow. It's not exactly a destructive urge; it's a nervous urge. The sign feels nervous about being wrong and therefore wants to prove it's right. Saturn in Leo represents a prolonged opportunity for you to gain safety and security in the intellectual sphere. To do this though, you have to go through a typically convoluted planetary process. You have to realize that safety, convincing your sun sign that you are finally smart enough, comes only when you realize that you don't actually have to be smart at all. You don't have to be right. You don't have to point out to others (however subtly) that they're wrong. You just have to realize that whatever it is you think has inherent value to you because you think it. And that's good enough. So that when someone else has an opinion, an approach, a method, or a thought process that makes your Gemini sun nervously want to point that they aren't correct - you don't have to. All you have to do is say to yourself 'Well, I'll be darned if that isn't interesting. Apparently, other people have their own unique approaches and opinions. I'm much more comfortable with my own point of view, but if others want to look at things another way, I'll have to admit I find it kind of enlightening and thought-provoking in a detached sort of way.' To put this another way - let it go. The more you can just let others be, the safer you will feel. You do not have the responsibility of being right for everyone else. Just for yourself. You don't have to be right in an objective sense. You just have to be comfortable with your own point of view. This is the equivalent of allowing your overtaxed, naturally mentally nervous sun heave a big sigh of relief. This kind of opportunity only comes along about every 30 years, so take advantage of it.

The potential disaster side of the equation comes if you take the opposite approach and run around being arrogantly intellectual, smart, irritable, or pushy with others in your communications with them. Saturn will turn around and bite you then, going to great lengths to humble you. (It likes to do that, teach humility.) Spare it the trouble and spend a couple of years kicking back and pleasantly listening to people without arguing. You'll learn a lot; it will feel pretty good, and you'll accidentally gain confidence in yourself that you never knew you were lacking.

As for the eclipses, by my reading they offer a pleasant opportunity for you. They occur in your 5th and 11th houses in Libra and Aries. The one in Libra occurs in your 5th house, a house that rules speculation and investments. With Jupiter wrapping up its stay in Libra during this month, it sounds like a good opportunity to me to cogitate and use some of that nervous mental energy to look at whether you have any good financial opportunities on the horizon. I'm not exactly urging you to take a wildy risky flyer on some investment scheme, more to think things through in this arena. Alternatively, you could look at whether there's an opportunity to further along some of your dearly held hopes and wishes this month.

Finally, for you single folks, if you've been busy being nice, this month could represent an opportunity for you to find what you've been looking for in a love partner. Keep your eyes open. Dang, that's a lot of opportunities for one short month!

CANCER: JUNE 21 - JULY 22

Well, hello Cancer. This month we're going to talk about what is probably one of your least favorite planets, Saturn. Saturn and Cancer don't get along all that well normally; it sometimes seems like Saturn is hell-bent on giving Cancers stomach ulcers, no matter where it happens to be. It's finally left your own sign, where it wasn't exactly little Mary Sunshine, and moved into Leo and your second house. What are we going to do about that?

Well, I suppose we're going to heave a big sigh and remind ourselves that Saturn is a planet that values realism and truth. It undoubtedly revealed some truths during its stay in your own sign and now it wants to reveal some truths to you in the area that governs acquisition and possession of material stuff. Being the gnarly kind of planet that it is, it is most likely going to want you to make some mistakes in this area over the next couple of years, so that it can get you to realize some truths about money and material things. A common manifestation of this truth and error process is experiencing a feeling of being limited and/or delayed in your material aspirations and results for a couple of years. The flip side of this placement though is that you can also experience very good tangible results in the money and possessions sector if you work hard and consciously think things through. The idea here is to do a constant reality check in this sector for the next couple of years so that you can figure out what works and what doesn't. Set goals and chart your progress so that you can actively learn. If you set about learning now, making your money mistakes relatively early in the cycle, by the end of it (in a couple of years), you could be extremely financially sophisticated and poised.

The other thing we're addressing this month is the solar and lunar eclipses in Libra and Aries that occur on the 3rd and 17th, respectively. These puppies fall in tricky angles of your chart, the 4th and 10th houses, squaring your natal sun by sign. You may run into some opposition on the home or career fronts. The key to whether this will be problematic for you or not, lies in your attitude towards any surprises that pop up in these areas. If at all possible, no matter what surprising thing happens, tell yourself that it is a good sign, that the universe is helping you out in some unexpected way. The universe loves you madly and is trying, in some typically strange and incomprehensible fashion, to see that you get the best from it. The reason to adopt this attitude is that the lunar eclipse falls in Aries. The lunar portion represents you Cancer, and the Aries portion represents a self-serving attitude that the universe revolves around your desires. The square portion represents the fact that Cancers in no way shape or form actually believe the universe revolves around their desires. That's natural, and I'm not going to try to force a complete personality change on you. It's just that the eclipse signals that you need to look at things like an Aries for a month or two and put yourself first. Whatever happens, it's all about you and the universe's complete inability to resist your charms and its therefore devoted desire to help you out even if in an inconveniently surprising and backhanded way.

LEO: JULY 23 - AUGUST 22

Leo, you lucky dog! Saturn has entered in to your own sign, and your solar first house. Okay, all right, not a lot of astrologers would call you a lucky dog on that account. But Saturn is a paradoxical planet. It can be kind of a beast. But it can also be a beautiful thing.

The issues it has taken upon itself to address in this sector of your chart have to do with your inner sense of purpose and meaning. Saturn often brings responsibilities (like children, for example) that greatly increase your obligations in life. But these obligations can also bring meaning and purpose, which is something many a Leo wouldn't automatically realize without Saturn's help.

Another area of potential interest for Saturn is the Leonine desire for self-expression. Your individual birth chart will play a big role in how this plays out for you (if you know your Ascendant, this would be a good month to read that forecast as well). But the basic idea here has to do with your ego and your conscious approach to life. The beautiful portion of the equation comes from a two year opportunity to really really push yourself to discover what it is in yourself, others, and life that gives you the most intense and meaningful pleasure. The idea behind Saturn is that it isn't what you used to think it was. It's not your ego, which is kind of surprising. It's actually something outside of yourself to which your ego can contribute. Your poor ego will always be hungry as long as it wants people to pay attention to you. Once you can get people to pay attention, however, to what it is that you contribute to, it starts to feel all warm and glowy inside. It's a really cool sensation actually, and you will greatly enjoy it once you get there.

The beastly side of the equation comes from the reality that sometimes it takes awhile to get there. Sometimes Saturn in your sign makes you feel kind of crappy and lost for awhile. Like you don't know what the heck is going on. Nothing you are trying works out really; other people are unaccountably critical; stuff weighs on you, worries pop out of your subconscious like weeds. Sometimes you even feel like you have a sore throat or a darn flu-like achy, tired feeling for excessively long stretches. In a strange kind of way, it's as though Saturn is putting you through a detoxification process. If you've ever done a detox fasting or other program, you know that one of the side effects is that you can feel pretty crappy until the stuff gets out of your system.

Looking at your chart and the eclipses coming on this month in Libra and Aries makes me think that one way you can speed up the process of detoxifying and discovering the beautiful thing to which you most desire to contribute your talents is by indulging in a little 3rd house/9th house style learning and education or some nice long trips. Sort of solace via the mind. I think this would work. On the other hand, I realize that you are also facing Neptune in your opposite sign, Mars in your career sector, and Jupiter rolling like a bowling ball toward your 4th house. So you have a lot going on and I'm not sure you realistically have the time to start taking night classes in Spanish and jetting around the world. What I'm more thinking is that perhaps you deserve some time this month to curl up and retreat with a good book, sort of escape and withdraw, while you allow your system time to adjust to these planetary configurations.

For the long term, I'm going to suggest that you use a journal throughout Saturn's stay in Leo. For a lot of reasons. A journal will help you track your progress. It will help your system detoxify by allowing you to get random thoughts and junk out of your mind and onto paper. But also, Saturn in your sign means you are kind of re-writing the story of your life. The planet is re-interpreting your history (rather slowly), so that the tale of your life has a new moral. If the story of your life as you knew it before contained a lot of high drama and romance, Saturn may be re-writing it to highlight your faithful devotion to and skill with animals. The new moral of the story being that instead of the drama princess or romantic heroine that you used to be, it now turns out that you are a uniquely valued contributor to the common welfare of the people and animals on our planet. Stuff like that. Not so much attention for yourself as attention to what you bring to the table. Of course, this is only one tiny example, but hopefully you kind of catch the drift of what Saturn's up to. Making your purpose a little more weighty that it used to be. So that you get a greater sense of meaning and satisfaction from it than you used to. You lucky dog!

VIRGO: AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22

This month, Virgo, we add another piece to the planetary puzzle that is your life these days. The major planet in question this month is Saturn, which has moved into Leo and your solar 12th house. I suppose that makes sense. Saturn in the 12th is not exactly an emotionally comforting placement and the universe is not really about your emotional comfort these days. No, the universe is much more about your growth these days than your comfort. With Saturn in the solar 12th, you can't really coast on autopilot and trust your unconscious to guide you down the gently flowing river of life, or something like that. That's okay with you, though, in a sense. Virgo can be as unconscious as anyone in a pinch, but it doesn't really prefer to coast in any sector. So in a way, this placement is fine for you. Saturn wants you to be very conscious and purposeful in how you express yourself these days--as a person and in relationships. So do most of the other planets. So that's cool, the other planets have probably got your mind too wound up for you to do anything else anyway. So go ahead, take this month, if you choose, to sit down and make some decisions about your life. Sort things out as best you can. Pick your way through the landmines, if there are any. And be prepared, for the next couple of years, to stay in reality and not fantasy, as best you can. Everything is going to feel much, much better if you do.

In the meantime, there are also a couple of eclipses coming up this month. One's in Libra in your solar 2nd house on the 3rd of October and another's in Aries in your solar 8th on the 17th. I could tell you that I have some idea what this emotional lunar eclipse on the 17th will be about, but I'd be lying. I have no idea how it will play out for you. It seems to be related to the personal evolution you are undergoing on a broad scale. Being in the 8th, it may bring out a bit of your animal nature in the sexual arena. Whether you're going to be completely comfortable with that I don't know. In a deeper sense, this eclipse is a reflection of the sea change your chart is going through in terms of its basic relationship between your inner self and the outer world of others. This seems to be a rather personal and perhaps bumpy eclipse, although ultimately I think it shores you up rather than bringing you down. The solar eclipse on the 3rd is more simple. It relates to how you earn your livelihood; some sort of surprise seems to be in store here. It could be a pleasant surprise on any number of levels; I certainly hope it will be.

SCORPIO: OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21

Saturn moved in to Leo and your solar 10th house in mid-July, and it'd be interesting for you to note if you've felt any effects yet. The 10th house relates to how you make money in a career or self-employment sense and your chart is brewing for a bit of a battle. Saturn in this sector wants to purify your career. Whether you're happy about this I don't know, but it's determined, in its weird Saturnian way to wrestle Leonine dignity as well as unique and satisfying self-expression from the universe for you in the area of your career or self-employment. Unfortunately, the way it plans to do this may very well include financial deprivation and lack. You may occasionally wonder where your next paycheck is coming from, how you will stand the stress, and whether you will ever regain your energy. It may seem like a very long couple of years. The traditional advice would be to be careful with your money until you figure out where your career is going (particularly if self-employed), and I've got nothing against the traditional advice. You can also be prepared to go along with Saturn's plans to get you a better career. You can actively think about what a better career would mean to you. In fact, you probably will think about this whether you want to or not. I would suggest thinking about it in this month before your birthday, because it's an ideal time for that kind of thing. Come your birthday month, it'll be time for you to rev up into a new solar and Jupiterian cycle and you may not have quite as much space to reflect.

Part of the reason now would be a good time to reflect is that a number of planets will bring their luggage into Libra, the sign of your solar 12th house. An eclipse will occur in that sign as well on October 3. I don't know whether you are going to feel this in any tangible sense but you could think of it as the universe giving the waters of your unconscious a good sloshing in the hopes of bringing some helpful instincts to the surface. Just observe what happens between now and the end of the next solar month. I think the universe is trying to help you bring more resources to bear on your personal situation, whatever it may be, and add elements to your personality and how you relate to the world. There's a complicated play of resonances here in your chart and they won't really sort themselves into any kind of coherent pattern until sometime next month, I don't think. There's also a solar eclipse in your solar 6th house of work and health. You may or may not feel this one in any tangible way either. There could be some surprises in one or both of those sectors for you. I certainly hope they are good surprises, if any materialize.

SAGITTARIUS: NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21

Sagittarius, this month we address what I think is a particularly important transit for you, Saturn in Leo in your solar 9th. With your ruling planet of Jupiter set to spend a year snoozing in your solar 12th, hosting Saturn in the house most closely related to your sign looks significant to me. It looks as though this transit is trying to accomplish everything it possibly can for your personal development. All kinds of things are on the agenda.

The ninth house, which is related to journeys both mental and physical, represents the essence of your Sagittarian soul. Life is a journey of experience for the Sagittarian, whether anyone else notices or not. Saturn here is interested in everything that makes up the total Sagittarian you. Your will, your purpose on the planet, your unconscious feelings about your self and your life, your psychology, your philosophy. Just about anything that's important to a Sagittarian, in fact.

Saturn is determined to broaden your consciousness and increase your perspective. How it will do this depends on your own circumstances. It will send some of you packing your bags to a new location for a period of time. It will encourage others of you to dive into books on the nature of thought, the brain, science, philosophy, ethics, or anything else appropriately mind-blowing it can think of.

Add to this eclipses in Libra and Aries on October 3 and 17, and it's almost like the universe is throwing the kitchen sink at you for a period. Well, not exactly throwing the kitchen sink at you, just pursuing a very broad and ambitious agenda that could include falling in love, a creative breakthrough, adventurous travel and exploration, a sudden change in your relationship to a group or club, the fulfillment of some exciting desire, or even a deliberate change in your physical appearance or how you present yourself. You've got about a jillion possibilities here and while some of them could freak you out, in a way it's very exciting. I don't know exactly how well you and Saturn are going to get along (Jupiter and Saturn will be in square by sign for about a year starting at the end of October, which doesn't necessarily foretell a smooth road), but you will go through changes that will ultimately make your Sagittarian mind feel great.

CAPRICORN: DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19

Capricorn, this month we're talking about your ruling planet, Saturn. It's in Leo now, in your solar 8th house. I have to admit I don't like having Saturn in the 8th house myself. I associate it with all kinds of unpleasant experiences. Tax problems, dealing with debt, insurance hassles, complications with joint finances, settlements, estate issues, and things like that come to mind. But the 8th house has another component beyond the bureaucratic and the financial. It also deals with feelings and ideas. In fact, what Saturn in the 8th reminds me of the most is what the survivors of Hurricane Katrina from last August will be dealing with over the next couple of years. Issues of loss, difficulties, being stripped down to essentials and then rebuilding slowly. I'm not implying that Saturn in your solar 8th will cause a hurricane in your life. It doesn't actually do that normally. What I mean is that survivors of a natural disaster inevitably have to deal with the tricky relationship between tangible stuff and feelings. Stuff and memories. Stuff and identity. How the things you have, or don't have, influence your ideas about what your life will be like. That's part of what's on your agenda as a Capricorn over the next couple years, sorting out the relationship between money and things with ideas and feelings.

The point of all this is that it helps you grow as a person. It expands your awareness and understanding of life. Hopefully, as a Capricorn you have become familiar enough with your ruling planet to already know this on some level. Because if you don't gain in understanding, then the experiences of Saturn in the 8th are pretty much wasted. And neither Saturn nor Capricorn can abide the idea of waste.

We've also been talking about the eclipses in Libra and Aries this month. These eclipses fall along the axis that deals with your home and your career. It's a mixed bag of influences and you have your choice of directions to go. The eclipse in Aries in your 4th solar house on October 17 picks up the theme from Saturn in the 8th in that it deals with the role of tradition, childhood, the past, feelings, and identity, and what role those play in your life right now. It is possible you could get some surprising news about your mother. It comes down to developing a secure sense of purpose, of acceptance, and of identity. Whether you will experience a sense of purpose and identity as a result of this eclipse, I don't know. But the universe is slowly working on this issue for you, in a rather bumpy way. It's operating under the belief that the only true source of security is emotional. That security comes with being okay with yourself no matter what. This isn't the belief system that normally drives the sign of Capricorn, so there is a bit of an adjustment process.

The eclipse in Libra on October 3 falls in the sector that deals with your worldly achievements. Because Libra is the sign of marriage, and the marriage partner, you may get some surprising news in connection with your life partner. Hopefully, it will be good news and will make your connections to others even stronger.

AQUARIUS: JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18

Hello Aquarius, this month we deal with the effect of Saturn's move in to Leo and your solar 7th where it will stay for about two years. This move represents your chart's willingness to engage in some vigorous debate with itself over some core and knotty issues. The solar 7th typically represents things like the marriage partner and one-on-one relationships. In reality, though, it actually represents how you deal with other people period, even if you're not married to them. And now your chart has a burning question on its mind. Which is - how exactly is one supposed to deal with other people? The sign of Aquarius firmly believes that we should deal with each other as unique individuals operating out of our essence, pursuing the activities and goals that reflect our separate identity whether traditional society and everyone else likes it or not. Saturn in the 7th says 'Oh really? Maybe relationships and dealing with other people is about something else entirely. Maybe it's about connection, not individuality.'

Or maybe not. Your chart really hasn't made up its mind about the proper nature of relationships yet and it's not going to for a while. Because Saturn in Leo is not just going to oppose your natal sun (which it will at some point), but it will oppose transiting Neptune in your sun sign around the middle of next year. This is when Saturn really starts mixing it up with you and the other planets. Questions on the table will include mind-benders like 'when you as an Aquarian look at others are you really just projecting your own fantasies on to them? Are they doing that to you? Can you truly know anyone? What the heck is really going on in your relationships and is it possible you are a big doofus who is screwing them up bigtime?' It's as though Neptune and Saturn are pawing their feet these days, waiting for the moment when they can have a huge showdown over the very nature of reality. There may be times when you get a headache just thinking about it, and others when you are so disoriented you feel sick to your stomach.

Literally. Energy bouncing between the first and seventh houses can easily play out in the body. The mind/body connection is alive and well in this configuration and you'll need to take good care of yourself physically, starting now.

Okay. So all of that is just too much for anyone to deal with at once, and so Aquarius, I'm going to suggest you don't. Just let things play out for awhile. You just don't have enough information yet to completely restructure your ideas about relationships and you don't really have the time either. Mars is busy tearing up your 4th house of home and Jupiter is chomping at the bit to explode with opportunity all over your career sector. With Mars perhaps literally knocking out the walls in your home sector (it can be associated with remodeling in this placement), there's no way you can figure out the weighty questions of the universe right now. So don't. Just spend the month observing. There are a couple of eclipses this month that will hopefully allow you to gather some clues about the nature of the impending Saturn/Neptune showdown without actually having to do anything yet.

What should you be observing as you search the skies for clues to your relationship future? Based on the positions of the eclipses, here are my suggestions. Observe your own behavior in relationships. Are you noticing yourself doing anything surprising? Pay attention also to what's going on in your own mind. How are you defining yourself these days? The emotional lunar eclipse in Aries on October 17 takes place in your solar 3rd house of communication. Take a look at how you communicate with others this month--and how they communicate with you. How do you feel about this communication? Finally, look at body issues. Anything happening in your body that might be a result of feelings, ideas, or stresses? Get a handle on those early and you stand to have a better time of it next year. That should give you plenty to think about without forcing any major changes on you that you're not ready for yet.

PISCES: FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20

So Pisces, Saturn has now ensconced itself in your 6th solar house of work. Saturn is the planet that rules the emotion of fear, and when it gets into the 6th house of a sensitive Pisces, it can create a little anxiety. If you have employees, or others who work for you, it can make you a little nervous about them as well.

Let's talk a little bit about why Saturn in this sector tries to make you nervous. There's an underlying tension in the charts of all Pisces. Sometimes it gets actively expressed and sometimes it's a bit below the surface. The tension has to do with the fact that the sign of Pisces gets its sense of security from being of service. Having no opportunity to be of service makes the sign scared, disoriented, and not entirely sure that life has true meaning any more. The 6th house is the house of service, and having a planet here tends to play up that underlying psychological tendency.

On the other hand, the sign ruling your solar 6th, Leo, is a sign that believes in creative self-expression, self-promotion, and sometimes self-aggrandizement. It likes to rule, not serve, to get its own way, not compromise. Thus, there's an ongoing tension between the true Piscean need for creative self-expression (Pisces is one of the most creative signs of all) and the need to be of humble service. Now that Saturn is in this sector, the two sides of the equation are baring their teeth at each other and growling in anticipation of a face-off.

To make things interesting for you, the universe has scheduled just such a showdown for August 2006, when your ruler Neptune, in Aquarius, will directly oppose Saturn in Leo. Until then, this underlying tension will wax and wane as Neptune, currently in the middle of Aquarius, glares suspiciously at Saturn. What this means is that the planets in the sky have some big picture items of concern on their agenda for you. Like getting you to develop your consciousness to a point in which ego and service are balanced. Work and play, creativity and security are other items to be balanced. Your attitudes toward the fundamental structures of your life (as regards work and purpose) are probably going to have to change, even if at the moment there seems to be no good reason why they should.

Oppositions like these often bring to the surface conflicts with others. Another way to put it is that if you have inner conflicts (e.g., you are working at a job that offers no creative fulfillment but you feel like you have to), someone else appears to highlight that conflict. For example, your boss may drive you absolutely nuts, as a way of helping you to realize how dissatisfied you are inside with your work situation. The bottom line is that no matter how important security is, your Pisces nature still demands that you explore your options to act and to express your creativity in some way. Figuring out how to do that over the next couple of years may get kind of tiring. Take care of your body. If it starts whining, see if you can figure out what your physical symptoms might mean in the larger framework of your life. As in, maybe you really do need a different job, or at least a vacation.

The eclipses in Aries and Libra in your 2nd and 8th solar houses work to augment these themes. They deal with issues of money and security, and the development of consciousness too. They also touch on body issues via Aries, and your relationships with others via Libra. These eclipses occur on October 17 and October 3, respectively. You may experience some surprises in these sectors between now and mid-November.

Fortunately, no matter what happens you have an ace in the hole. Pisces is the sign of inspiration; and when you don't know what to do, you can call upon your magic powers of inspiration. Let the answers come to you. They will eventually. Be courageous; be a Pisces. In the end (which is a couple of years from now, when Saturn leaves Leo), you will probably win everyone over, even the big planets in the sky. The ultimate result is intended to be a much better work situation for you, whatever form that may take.

TOPIC OF THE MONTH:

THE GOOD SIDE OF SATURN

Saturn is one weird planet. It spends most of its time trying to convince you that it's really mean. And then at the end it hands you a big fat gift to make your dreams come true. It reminds me of a person I knew who opposed his daughter's plans for college with true Saturnian sternness. She responded like a Saturn person herself, and scraped and saved up her money to attend on her own, in spite of his wishes. On the day she was to start school, the Saturnian dad suddenly presented her with enough money to pay for an entire year of college.

Why does Saturn act like this? Does it want to make sure you're really determined? Does it want to test your resourcefulness? Does it just like jacking people around for no good reason? Or does it have a heart of gold underneath its stern exterior?

It's hard to say, but it's helpful to remember Saturn's habit of turning out to be the good guy in the end. Old sayings like "it's always darkest before the dawn," and "every cloud has a silver lining" come in handy when dealing with Saturn. Saturn can go out of its way to convince you that you will never ever ever find true love, and then reward you at the end of a harrowing journey through the back alleys of romantic frustration with your knight in shining armor, a beautiful engagement ring, and something that looks a lot like the happily ever after of fairy tales. Go figure.

Most of the time, getting Saturn to cough up the big rewards involves determination, persistence, trial and error, fortitude, patience, dedication to a goal, hard work, frustration, difficulty, and a certain lack of good feeling. You can think of it as a Zen master planet. There you are, all hot for enlightenment, and Saturn insists you start by washing out your rice bowl conscientiously. No shortcuts with this big guy. It strips everything back to practical essentials and builds from there.

These days, Saturn is traveling the terrain associated with the sign of Leo. In this sign, it has a tendency to take on knotty issues of identity. No matter what solar house Leo may represent in your chart, Saturn usually finds a way to associate it with your core identity. If it takes aim at your 2nd house of money related matters, it tends to ask you to define your identity with regards to money more carefully. It doesn't necessarily ask you to make a big change. It asks you to be an individual and make your own decisions based on your own core values. Saturn's not real big on getting you a lot of help in the sector it travels either. It asks you to figure it out for yourself.

Sometimes it asks you to curtail activity in the sector it travels; sometimes it asks you to ramp it up. If its crawling through your solar 4th house and you already over-identify with your home life, Saturn will try to get you to redefine your identity by restricting your options in your previous comfort zone. If it's in your 7th house of relating to others and relating to others is not your strong suit--Saturn may ask you to take serious action to gain some mastery in this area. Again, Saturn leaves it up to you to figure out whether you need to pay more attention to the sector it travels, or less.

Doesn't necessarily sound like a lot of fun. Sometimes it isn't. But, boy, when you finally get the hang of dealing with knotty sector (whatever it may be for you), do you ever feel satisfied. You just don't get that sense of satisfaction and pride with things that come easy. You don't get that feeling of accomplishment, or of confidence in yourself without the kind of help Saturn brings. The worst things eventually become the best when Saturn's at the helm.

There's another story to illustrate Saturn in Leo. It's the story of Scrooge. Miserly Scrooge is the quintessential representation of Saturn and its capacity for transformation. Scrooge starts out in Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" by being one mean old stingy guy. The Ghost of Christmas Past shows Scrooge why his heart is so hard. Loneliness, abandonment, lack of love and sympathy--all of these things in Scrooge's past made him believe that it was just too darn scary and painful to open himself up to other people. A look at Christmas Present shows Scrooge that in spite of all his efforts to protect himself, the present ain't all that great either. The Ghost of Christmas Future seals the deal by letting Scrooge know that the path he is on will never work. It only leads to damnation in the end.

In the story, Scrooge, scared and overwhelmed, sees the light. He remembers the most important thing about himself. He remembers that he always wanted love, to get it, to share it, to feel it, to express it, to dance around reveling in it with the joyous spirit that Christmas represents. And that's exactly what he does in the end. He showers his formerly abused employee, Bob Cratchit, with generosity and good spirit and receives it back in return.

This is Saturn in Leo. This is all of us. We all have bitter and negative experiences. We all seek to protect ourselves from more of the same by reducing our capacity to feel. We do this to survive. Saturn is all about survival and the things we do in the name of its necessities. That's half the story.

The other half of the story is that this form of self-protection never works in the long run. Our not-so-great past because our almost-as-bad present. Our not-too-wonderful present cuts off our future from everything we most truly want. Leo is associated with the heart, the capacity to love, and to give, to be generous and noble, and joyful and confident in ourselves. Saturn in Leo demands cranking open those closed parts of our hearts (everyone has them) so they can see the light again.

HOW TO USE KEYWORDS: The essence of learning astrology is understanding how to mix, match, and blend the concepts associated with signs, planets, and houses to figure out what is or will be affecting you at a given point in time. This takes practice and practice is exactly what you're going to have a chance to get if you use the keywords each month.

Keywords can be used to plan and take action using the month's energies, to explain events or to make predictions. Scan for keywords that seem relevant to situations in your own life. You'll have 3 sets of keywords you can blend, one for the planet discussed, one for the sign it's in and one for the solar house it's transiting. Pick the keywords that interest you most and create your customized horoscope!

For example, if the Sun is in Aries in your solar first house, if you want to plan or take action you might pick the Sun keyword 'power', the Aries keyword 'initiating', and the 1st house keyword 'self-expression' to create an intention for yourself that you have the power to initiate actions to express yourself more fully in ways that you desire. You'll know what 'self-expression' means to you. It works best if you pick keywords that 'speak' to you or that coincide with elements of your life that already concern you. To receive astrological benefits, it's not necessary that you obligate yourself to do something huge - it's only necessary that you take one step in the right direction at the right time. Astrology concerns itself with when things are born, and if you start something at the right time, you're riding on the energy that's already available to you in the universe.

You can also use the keywords to try to figure out if something that is affecting you is 'in the stars'. For example, let's say you find yourself wondering why you're getting drawn into conflicts with people at your church. You scan the keywords and realize 'Aha! The fiery energy of Aries is currently being activated in my 12th house of faith-related matters!' If the energy is uncomfortable, you'll have a gauge as to how long it will be prominent (oh good, it should ease up next month!) or if it's a good energy you'll know which planet to thank!

You can also try your hand at predicting. If you check in at the beginning of the month and notice that your house of friendships is highlighted along with some active planetary or sign energies, you might predict for yourself that you will be engaging in a lot more fun and restorative activities with your friends in the coming month. This is basically what professional astrologers do and now you have a chance to try your own hand at it and compare your results with the pros. Have fun!

NOTE: There are a wide variety of potential keywords associated with each sign, planet, and house. I pick different ones each month to give you an idea of the range from the most common concepts to much more subtle ones. Over time, you'll gain an intuitive sense of what kinds of concepts are associated with each element and you'll even be able to generate your own keywords as you get a feel for each of the signs, planets, and houses. Each keyword also inherently contains its opposite as well. For example, if the keyword 'divorce' is displayed, it doesn't mean you'll get a divorce. But it does mean that if that is a concern for you and something you want to avoid you have an opportunity, while that energy is activated, to take proactive steps to deal with potential problems or head off an undesirable outcome. So you can turn 'divorce' into 'keeping a marriage together' or 'illness' into 'taking steps to get and stay healthy'.

Use your rising sign for better forecasts! Most published horoscopes are based at least in part on transits to solar houses. Solar houses are based on your sun sign and are easy to calculate. Your sun sign is your solar 1st house, the next sign in the zodiac is your solar 2nd house and so on. You can always determine what solar house a planet is in if you know the sign. Simply start with your own sign and count around the zodiac until you reach the sign you're interested in. For example, if you're a Gemini, the sign of your solar 3rd house is Leo. Pisces is the sign of your solar 10th house. Astrologers who publish horoscopes use sun signs and solar houses for several reasons: a) almost everyone knows their birthday; b) they're easy to calculate; and c) they actually do have some effect. However, if you get a personal reading from a professional astrologer, he or she will almost always use transits to your natal houses to give you a reading instead. Natal houses are based on your rising sign, which is determined by the exact time, place, and day you were born. Transits to your natal planets and houses have at least as much effect on your life as transits to your solar houses, sometimes quite a bit more. If you really want to know your chart, and get better horoscopes, you should find out your rising sign (also called Ascendant). If you know the exact time and place of your birth, you can do this for free at a wonderful website - www.astro.com. Click on the link near the top that says 'Free Horoscopes'. On that page, scroll down to the link that says 'Chart Drawing, Ascendant'. Follow the prompts to enter the information concerning your birth time, date, and place. You'll get a chart that shows your Ascendant (the sign next to the designation 'AC'). To the left will be a box listing your planetary placements. Next to the listing for 'AC' your rising sign will be listed along with the degree of your Ascendant within that sign. Make a note of that sign and be sure to check the horoscope and keywords for your Ascendant as well as your sun sign!

TRACK YOUR RESULTS! Next month when you come back here for your next horoscope, take 30 seconds to assess the results of the action you took last month as a result of your horoscope. Did it make you feel better? Did it make your life any better? Did it give you renewed energy or did you find your effort blocked, delayed, or ineffective? Judging your results allows you to assess how responsive you are to a particular planetary, sign, or house energy. For example, some people are very responsive to the astrological Sun just the way some people are very responsive to a sunny day. Other people work better with the energy of other planets. Only by taking a moment to gauge your results can you learn which planets work best for you in your life. You may have an 'afflicted' natal Sun that never does much for you, but a raring-to-go Mars that will help you in a pinch every time. Checking your results each month will give you an increasingly accurate guide as to how to use astrology to enhance your life.
